J.Crew’s First Boston Flagship Store Opens on Newbury Street
In the former home of Brooks Brothers, rollneck sweaters abound.

When the first J.Crew catalogs landed in the ’90s, my high school friends and I treated them like sacred texts. We’d pore over the glossy pages, marking our favorites: chunky rollneck sweaters, earthy-toned barn jackets, and plaid flannel shirts—pieces that became the backbone of my fall wardrobe in high school, and for years after.
Now, decades later, J.Crew is still going strong, marking a new chapter in Boston with the opening of a Newbury Street flagship. Housed in a historic 1880 building—previously a nearly-90-year home to Brooks Brothers—the two-level store is among the brand’s largest nationwide. To make it J.Crew’s own, the space’s extensive overhaul included custom millwork, a centralized wrought iron staircase, and tailored design that echoes J.Crew’s blend of tradition and modernity—an evolution of the brand’s heritage through a contemporary lens. “It’s a reflection of where J.Crew is headed—rooted in our heritage but reimagined for today,” says J.Crew Group CEO Libby Wadle.

Inside, the flagship, which opened last week, brings together the full assortment—men’s, women’s, and children’s. Beloved classics like the 1988 rollneck sweater and extensive cashmere collection share space with suiting, denim, and elevated party looks. There are also exclusives made just for this store: a maroon wool Boston College sweater; graphic tees celebrating neighborhood landmarks like Mike’s Pastry and Kelly’s Roast Beef; vintage nods to the Celtics, Red Sox, and local bands; plus limited-edition totes, embroidered hats, and scarves depicting Cape Cod Bay, which were introduced at the brand’s pop-up on Nantucket this summer.
The flagship is more than just retail. On site, there will be a community celebration on September 27 featuring live embroidery, custom giftables, and a candy bar by Madeline’s. Throughout the fall, a J.Crew-wrapped duck boat will cruise around Boston, signaling the brand’s new presence in the city.
Standing in the store, I couldn’t help but think back to those catalogs I pored over as a teenager. My style has evolved since then, and so has J.Crew. The brand still delivers its timeless classics, but their stock now ranges from polished workwear to sequined dresses and faux fur coats, plus accessories. I gravitate toward the elevated “Collection” line, while the children’s offerings show the brand has grown alongside its customers’ lives. In Boston, the Newbury Street flagship captures this balance perfectly—honoring J.Crew’s past while embracing the present.
